  • Getting ready for Beargrease

The John Beargrease sled dog race is just around the corner and I thought I should get this up dated.

Bill and I are training two teams again this year.  I will be running the Beargrease marathon, which starts on Jan 31st in Duluth, MN.  I have narrowed my team to 15 right now.  I just have to make the finial cut and we are ready.  We will do one finial long training run this week and then start to  back off on the mileage and keep everyone happy and healthy.

Ruby and Poke will once again be leading my team.  I have mostly veterans with 2 or 3 two year old thrown in.  I will keep you posted on how we do.

Sorry it took so long for me to get this started.

We made it back form Maine and we were very happy with our races out there.  Bill finished his first race and did very well.  He finished 18th and still had a smile on his face.  He was happy to finish but most of all he was very proud of Coke, Tosca, Ruger, River, Irene, Seven, Colt and Odin.

I started the race just hoping for a top 10 finish.  This years race was one of the most competative fields  of mushers ever seen at the Can-Am.  My run in to Portage went just as I wanted it to, except for the miles and miles and miles of gravel road we had to run over.  I arrived in Portage at dusk.  As I was trying to get the runners off my sled, the gravel roads had taken a toll on them,  Bruce Langmaid said “Look at at the sky”  I looked up and saw the most beautiful sunset.  I said to Bruce “This is why we do this. ” It was the perfect ending to a wonderful day.

The dogs ran the rest of the race with out much of a problem.  When we arrived in Maibec and learned we were running first I was shocked.  I knew Matt had a geat team and would pass us soon.  It was a good feeling to be in first, if only for  a little while.  I was so proud of my dogs, they  hung on and finished a respectable 3rd in a very tough race.
